5 On-Page SEO Mistakes Almost Every Beginner Makes
The good news about on-page SEO is that everything on this list is within your control. You do not need a developer, a big budget or backlinks to fix any of it. You just need to know where to look.
1. Writing title tags for humans only, not search intent
A catchy title without the target keyword gives away an easy ranking signal. The fix is not to stuff keywords — it is to lead with the words someone would actually type, then make it compelling.
Before: “Welcome to Our Clinic”
After: “Dental Clinic in Patiala — Same-Day Appointments”
2. Skipping the meta description
Google sometimes rewrites it anyway, but leaving it blank hands away control over how your page is pitched in search results. A clear, benefit-led description of around 150 characters still improves click-through rate when Google uses it.
3. One H1 — then bold text for every other heading
Search engines use heading hierarchy (H2, H3) to understand a page’s structure. Bold paragraph text does not carry the same signal, and it makes long pages harder to scan. Use one H1 for the page topic, H2s for main sections and H3s for sub-points.
4. Zero internal links
New pages often sit in isolation, with no links to or from other pages on the same site. Internal links help visitors and search engines discover related content — and they are entirely within your control. Every new page should link to at least two related pages, and receive links from them.
5. Uncompressed images slowing the page down
A single unoptimised hero image can add seconds to load time, hurting both user experience and Core Web Vitals. Compress images before uploading, serve modern formats such as WebP, and add descriptive alt text. It is a five-minute fix with an outsized impact.
A 10-minute on-page checklist
- Does the title tag start with the main keyword?
- Is there a clear meta description with a benefit?
- Is there exactly one H1, with logical H2s and H3s?
- Does the page link to — and get links from — related pages?
- Are images compressed and given alt text?
The pattern behind all five
None of these mistakes need advanced technical skill to fix — they need you to know to look for them. That is the habit BIIM’s On-Page SEO module is designed to build, alongside Keyword Research and Technical SEO.
